Project Summary >
Sidney Waterfront Habitat Mapping
2006
January 01, 1900
British Columbia
Seabed habitat mapping was conducted off Sidney, BC between Sidney Marina and Tulista Park to a distance 300 m offshore for the Town of Sidney. Image collection and habitat mapping involved the use of high-frequency sidescan sonar to provide 100% acoustic coverage of the substrates, and the Seabed Imaging and Mapping System (SIMS), to provide high-resolution video images. The advantages of using both systems was that the substrate types interpreted from the SIMS video imagery could be overlain on sidescan sonar mosaics to ground-truth the sidescan sonar data and create polygon maps of substrate types.
Key Features:
- Video imagery interpretation of seafloor substrate and biota
- Geo-referenced sidescan sonar mosaics with substrate type polygon overlay
- Identified and mapped habitat associations (substrate and biota)
