Project Summary >
Marine Significant Areas – Developing an Identification and Mapping Tool
1999 - 2007
June 15, 2007
British Columbia
Since 1999, Archipelago has been involved in projects aimed at identifying Marine Significant Areas. Recently a framework concept was identified from which a planning and decision support tool for the identification and mapping of Marine Significant Areas can be developed. This was built upon previous experience in identifying and mapping MSAs subject to impacts from forestry activities and in identifying MSAs as part of a resource planning process (e.g., Nootka Coastal Resource Use Plan and the North Coast Land and Resources Management Plan).Key Features:
- Evaluate existing MSA identification, planning and management tools
- Identify important MSA planning tool characteristics
- Identify an approach to defining and mapping marine features that meet various stakeholders’ mandates and priorities
