Progress Towards Environmental Sustainability in BC’s Seafood Sector

2001 - Current

January 01, 1900 British Columbia

Since 2001, Archipelago has been working on sustainability issues with the BC Seafood Alliance, an umbrella organization representing the BC seafood harvesting industry. A background report was prepared on the progress towards environmental sustainability in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors of BC based on the principles of 1) sustainable harvest of target species and stock; 2) limited impacts of the fishery on non-target species, habitats and ecosystems; and 3) effective management/regulatory system. More recently, key sustainability issues in BC fisheries were described in a series of Sustainable Issue Sheets available on the BC Seafood Alliance website: www.bcseafoodalliance.com

    Key Features:
  • Develop a framework for environmental sustainability assessment
  • Assess recent trends in management practices
  • Report on areas of substantive progress and identify areas where further progress is warranted
  • Prepare clear-language Sustainable Issue Sheets
