Assessment of Fisheries Resources and Habitat Issues Related to Protective Beack Works in Ross Bay

1995 - 2002

January 01, 1900 British Columbia

Intertidal and subtidal (dive) biophysical surveys and detailed habitat maps were completed for the City of Victoria to assess fish habitat values and net habitat loss resulting from the implementation of protective beach works in Ross Bay, which involved the placement of a large amount of gravel (79,000 tonnes) onto the intertidal zone. Habitat compensation design and post-construction monitoring of habitat compensation features (rock berm/sills) and beach fill movement was provided. This project has served as a demonstration model for softer, dynamic approaches to shore protection.

    Key Features:
  • Intertidal and subtidal biophysical surveys and detailed habitat maps
  • Net habitat loss calculation
  • Poster preparation and public meeting attendance
  • Monitor placement of beach protection
  • Long-term monitoring of habitat compensation colonization and beach fill movement
